Mochon’s Lettering

Here’s a hand-lettered display typeface based on the lettering of Donald Mochon. Don was the dean of the RPI school of Architecture (Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute) until 1966. To give you an idea of what kind of person Don was, I recommend this article by his friend and colleague, George Rickey.

It’s impossible to truly capture Donald’s zany hand lettering style in a typeface but this comes pretty close. Using OpenType technology, variations of letters and numerals are automatically shuffled to reduce the number of repeated letters and give words more bounce.

Thanks to Karl Petersen, who came up with the idea for this project, provided me with samples of Donald’s work and insights into the history of this great man.
